How many times have you found yourself on January 2nd thinking about what you want to do in the new year? This is not the time to be planning. This is the time to hit the ground running while the rest of the world is sitting still trying to figure out next moves. Consider doing this in the early part of the 4th quarter so you have time to brainstorm and get input from other key players. I look at this professionally and personally.
Professionally:
Review your organization’s Mission Statement and Values
- Are they still relevant and inspiring?
- If not, tweak them
- Make this a part of the start of the new year
Review progress on current goals
- Assess how to address unmet expectations
- Celebrate your wins!!! Take time to appreciate the progress made
Set new goals
- Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time-bound
- Make sure you can measure progress
- Plan to review at least quarterly
Set an Annual Primary Objective
- Create an Action Plan to get there
- Remind your organization of your APO in every meeting
Personally:
Review your personal Mission Statement and Values
- If you don’t have these, consider developing them
- These clarify what you are about when opportunities present themselves throughout the year
- Tweak them when necessary
Review progress on current goals
- Assess how to address where you are falling short
- Celebrate your wins!!!
Set new goals
- Roll forward previous unmet goals that still apply
- Consider the following categories:
Social – who you want to intentionally be with
Physical – define ‘in shape’ and your plan to get there
Financial – goals to get out of debt and savings amounts
Mental – how you plan to keep growing mentally
Marriage/Family – your intentional plans to grow closer
Household – improvements needs at home
Spiritual – plan to be healthy spiritually
Ministry – plan to get involved with what tugs at your heart
- Print these out and display them in a prominent place
This will take some time to put in place but is well worth it if you really want to make the most of the new year.
